Jolly Roger

Originally meant as a warning when pirates were spotted in the surrounding waters. It has since been adopted by pirates themselves as their symbol, with numerous variants on the design. The Rook Pirates used the classic black flag behind a skull wearing a captain's hat. Such a stylish yet relatively simple look may have represented adherence to their roots.
